By the end of 2022, the Research Fab Battery Cells (FFB) at the Hansa Business Park in Amelsbüren is scheduled to begin operations. To this end, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia acquired a 39,000 square metre site on the Dortmund-Ems Canal from Wirtschaftsförderung Münster GmbH. The FFB is being established as part of the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology IPT in Aachen.
700 million euros in funding for battery production in Germany
The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is funding the setting up of the FFB with a total of 500 million euros over the next few years. Over a period of five years, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia will provide an additional 200 million euros in total for land, building construction and further development of the infrastructure and promotion of young researchers.
150 new jobs at the Münster location
In the future, around 150 jobs are to be created in the research factory, both in production and in scientific areas. Battery and production experts are already being recruited throughout Germany and Europe. With this expertise, the FFB should become the European beacon for manufacturing-related battery research.
The Research Fab Battery Cells is embedded in the umbrella concept "Forschungsfabrik Batterie" under which the BMBF has arranged its funding of battery technology at various competence centres and clusters in the country.
